Base Ecosystem Fund: Investment, Not a Grant

The Base Ecosystem Fund is the strategic investment arm of Base with Coinbase Ventures, writing pre-seed and seed cheques plus credits and priority access to Coinbase Prime, Business and the Onramp API. It is a different programme from Base Builder Grants. Here is the difference and how to apply.

Ready to position in Base?Start on BaseAirdrop page

Base runs two separate funding programs and people constantly conflate them. Base Builder Grants hand out small retroactive amounts (around 1-5 ETH) for work you have already shipped. The Base Ecosystem Fund is something else entirely: it is the strategic investment arm of Base, run in partnership with Coinbase Ventures, and it writes pre-seed and seed investment cheques into companies building on Base. Grant versus investment. Different applications, different bar, different outcome.

What the Base Ecosystem Fund is

The fund describes itself as backing "the world's top talent building the next generation of enduring and high-performance onchain primitives and businesses that drive real economic activity." It was announced in February 2023 alongside the Base testnet, deploys both equity and token-based investments, and is deliberately borderless and team-centric - its stated focus is the team, not the geography.

What you get beyond capital is arguably the point:

  • Hands-on ecosystem support and partner integrations
  • Credits with AWS, Azure, Alchemy and Spindl
  • Priority access to Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Business and the Onramp API

That last one is the real asymmetry. Priority access to Coinbase's payment and custody rails is something you cannot buy at pre-seed, and it changes what a consumer onchain product can actually ship.

In March 2025 the fund also became a group lead on Echo.xyz, letting accredited investors co-invest alongside Coinbase Ventures in selected Base deals - a signal that deal flow, not capital, is the constraint.

Individual cheque sizes and total fund size are not publicly disclosed. Coinbase Ventures pre-seed and seed cheques are typically in the low hundreds of thousands to low millions, but treat any specific figure you see quoted for this fund as unverified.

Fund vs grants: which one are you applying to?

Base Builder Grants: a retroactive grant, typically around 1-5 ETH, for something you have already shipped and that people use. You give up nothing - no equity, no tokens. Best for solo builders, weekend projects and tools.

Base Ecosystem Fund: a venture investment at an undisclosed pre-seed or seed cheque size. You give up equity and/or tokens. The bar is a company with a team and a thesis, not a project. Best for teams building a real business on Base.

Apply to grants to get paid for work you have done. Apply to the fund when you are raising a round. They are not competing options and applying to one does not preclude the other - shipping something that wins a grant is a perfectly good way to get on the fund's radar.

How to apply

Applications go through the fund page at . The fund also sources heavily through ecosystem activity and network referrals, which is the part most applicants ignore: a cold form from a team with no onchain footprint is a very different read from a team whose contracts are already deployed on Base with real users.

Practically, before you apply:

Ship on Base first. Deployed contracts, real transactions, real users. The fund is team-centric but evidence-led.
Be a company, not a project. Pre-seed venture money buys equity or tokens. Know what you are selling and what you would do with the cheque.
Have the Coinbase-rails answer ready. If priority access to Prime, Business or Onramp does not change your product, you are applying to the wrong programme - take the grant instead.
Get referred if you can. Ecosystem activity and referrals are stated sourcing channels.
If you can build it but cannot build it

The honest blocker for most people reading this is not the idea, it is shipping the thing. Both programmes fund evidence, and evidence means a working product on Base. That is the exact gap we close: we build it with you at build.airdropsea.app , and you can see what we have already shipped at ceoism.com .

FAQ
